The Gateway Arch, St. Louis Missouri, Westard Expansion. Voyage of Discovery Celebrate St. Louis! The Arch is in the Jefferson National Expansion Park, acres of urban forest, at the St. Louis Riverfront of the mighty Mississippi River. * The 630ft sculpture and architectural work, by Eero Saarinen ≅ City+Arch+River ≅ Lewis and Clark Expedition, Voyage of Discovery. In 1804 the Men of the Corps of Discovery, Lewis and Clark, a 'rest-area' stop and incidently the trading post of Indian gifts and trade goods, later became the future city’s first permanent settlement. The Arch is a memorial to Thomas Jefferson’s role in opening the West, to the pioneers who helped shape its history, and to Dred Scott who sued for his freedom.
